In December 2003, Gerry was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Six weeks of chemo and radiation in February and March 2004 killed the cancer cells and shrank the tumor. On May 4th, 2004 a foot (30cm) of colon and the rectum were removed and a colostomy installed. Follow-up chemo from June to October as a precaution.
